Somewhere between
3 1/2 and 4 Years of Age
Something happens to your Child
Your child begins marching to a
different drum. And banging it, too.

You might say a young preschooler is suddenly out to change the world. There are noises to be made. Pictures to be drawn. Things to build, things to knock down. So much to do! Your 3-year-old child is becoming an increasingly active force in his or her own environment and is no longer content to simply sit back and soak it all up.

Kindermusik Imagine That!® Imagine That! is a 60 minute, 16 week class for ages 3 to 5 years and is designed for that crucial developmental period when a child moves from receptive to expressive learning.

Themes include See What I Saw, Toy I Make, Trips I Take, Hello Weather, Let's Play Together and Cities, Busy Places, Friendly Faces.

In a small group setting instrument play is introduced to foster fine motor skills as well as familiarity with music concepts like rhythm, pitch and timbre. Vocal development is encouraged with lots of singing and creative movement strengthening coordination. In Imagine That!, the thinker, creator and musician come together and give your child new musical ways to explore the world and to express her discoveries, build critical vocal development skills through singing games, listening and echoing activities. Learning by repeating songs and patterns is fundamental to the devlopment of a good musical memory. We explore and learn to play a variety of instruments including rhythm sticks, shakers, drums and many others.

If you were to peek in on a Kindermusik Imagine That! class, what would you likely see? You'll see 3- and 4-year-olds learning to apply themselves to a task. Expressing themselves vocally. Working happily in a group. And gaining the all-important abilities to listen, to think, and to express creatively in the world.

Kindermusik for the Young Child®
Semester 1 - Year 1
We focus on the development of basic musical concepts and lay the foundation for success later on. We learn the fundamentals of musical dictation, reading and writing music, proper instrument handling, ensemble preparation, study the music and life of Mozart, interpret and tell musical stories, explore the World of Music, the instrument families of Percussion and Brass Winds, and learn to play the Glockenspiel (a tuned, barred, percussion instrument), which goes home in the 12th week to begin playing the many songs we have learned.

Semester 2 - Year 1
The concepts of Semester 1 are quickly reviewed, then we continue to add more notes, more complicated rhythm patterns and generally build on the previous semester activities. New musical concepts are introduced; including forte and piano, crescendo and diminuendo, and of course legato and staccato. We review the Percussion and Brass Wind families and add the String and Woodwind families and the Complete Orchestra through sound, pictures, demonstrations and even hands on experience, we also learn about the life and music of Beethoven, and even play Musical Baseball.

Semester 3 - Year 2
In Year 2 we greatly expand our focus to cover music of different cultures from around the world. First, we review the Year One concepts and bring everyone up to speed. On the very first day we assemble our Dulcimers (a simple 2 stringed instrument from the Appalachian Mountains) and begin to learn to play them. We continue to expand our repertoire on the Glockenspiels and to grow and develop skills in all areas. We also focus on Appalachian Music, Music of the Sea, Native American Music, Music of our African-American Heritage, the World of Dance, and learn about the life and music of Tchaikovsky.

Semester 4 - Year 2
In Semester 4 we add the Soprano Recorder (a simple Wind Instrument). This is the pinnacle class and usually requires a small amount of daily at home practice (perhaps 5 minutes). All earlier concepts are utilized and expanded upon. We begin again with a quick review and then explore Music Makers around the World including those from Europe, the Pacific Islands, Japan, Africa, and South and Central America. We study the life and music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Keyboard Instruments. We are now playing with complex storylines and ensembles and musical creation and interpretation. The child is truly prepared and ready for the successful study of a specific instrument.

Music Makers at the Keyboard

Music Makers at the Keyboard is a 90 minute, 16 week class for children aged 8 to 10 years.

Singing songs is a central part of every lesson since this allows the children to begin the piano experience by playing familiar songs. A primary goal is to fill the children's heads with this wide repertoire of songs so that the children's playing is generated from what can already be heard, sung and understood. Many songs will include games, dances or instrumental activities. The more the children sing, the more they want to sing. The better they know the songs, the greater the pleasure they derive from singing songs together. Wanting to play the song and being able to play the song is this class's foundation for success.

Movement is the body's expression of
rhythm. Listening is vital to all learning and
is fundamental to the aural art of music.

In addition to song repertoire, we will work on form, beat, meter, tonality and patterns by tapping, drumming, body movements, and listening to and echoing patterns. In Music Makers at the Keyboard classes, each lesson features movement and listening activities that help children lay the foundation necessary for successful instrument playing. Establishing a bridge between songs the children can sing and those they will play at the keyboard is called the Keyboard Song Process. Because these songs are so familiar, the ear becomes what Maria Montessori would have termed the A "self-correcting instrument", guiding the hands in what to play. As the class progresses we will grow into improvisation and composition.

The role of the parent is vital to the
success of the child.

You and your child's siblings will join us for the last 15 minutes of class. The role of the parent is vital to the success of the child. Parents can help by establishing good practice habits and a regular practice schedule from the very beginning. Although the child will become increasingly independent as the year progresses, the parent's personal interest and enjoyment are essential to maintain the child's enthusiasm and motivation. Parent Time is that special part of class when children and adults share the joy of group music making. This time gives parents a chance to become familiar with new material and the teacher the opportunity to model learning techniques used in this method. During Parent Time the companion adults learn aurally - the same way that their children are learning. This kind of learning must be experienced so that parents understand how they can aid their children on the pathway to music literacy. The children are delighted to have their parents as a companion on this pathway.

Finally, if you so choose, it is appropriate to match this experience with private piano lessons, thus your student will explore music from all angles - the best imaginable way to develop a joyful, competent musician.

Parents & students are asked to provide the following:

  • An established practice time in an environment free from distractions of 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. With Supervision of practice sessions and in establishing good study habits.
  • Follow the 4 Step Patten Process
  • Always be most enthusiastic and suportive of your student's efforts.
  • Listen to good music EVERY Day!
  • Attend live music at least once a month.
  • A central place to keep music materials and a bag for carrying them to and from lessons.
  • A good instrument in good repair. Have your piano tuned twice a year. If you have a keyboard, it must have at least 76 full sized, touch sensitive keys, MIDI jack, and a pedal jack. A better one would have 88 fully weighted keys. A digital piano is a step above a keyboard. Small, sub-sized keys will NOT work for the student.
Join Us today to explore Music at the Keyboard & Around the World.

At Home Materials and Their Use

In the Children's Book assignments will be listed in 3 categories 1) Keyboard, 2)Listen, Drum and Dance, and 3) Write and Read. Your Home Kit will include the Listening CD and the Practice CD. The Listening CD can become an enjoyable experience for the entire family. It features a variety of instrumentations and musical styles. Parents and children are encouraged to play the Listening CD often, familiarity with the songs and repertoire plays a significant role in the child's success.

The Practice CD provides an opportunity for children to hear the keyboard songs played in a way that they will soon be able to play them. In addition, the Keyboard Song Process is repeated on the CD and contains Notation Games. Your child will listen to individual tracks, as assigned, and participate in the 4 step pattern process: 1)Sing a pattern 2) Echo the singing 3) Sing and play the pattern 4) Echo the singing and playing.

About Us

Karen

Hi ! My name is Karen. I have been teaching music - primarily piano practice, theory and performance - in Rancho Cucamonga since 1983. My studio, Beginnings in Music, is both the oldest and the largest private piano studio in this city. The majority of new students come from recommendations - so I am doing something right! I have played professionally, am currently learning guitar, cello, dulcimer and recorder, continuing classes on music pedagogy and child development and have spent many years working with various choirs and child care.

I come from a musical family and I have always been involved with music, but I began teaching music in high school. By the time I graduated from college I had a full studio and a job I already loved. And that is what it takes. I am closely involved with the State and national music teachers organizations and a past district IV coordinator for EMTA and a vice president of our local chapter.

I very much wanted to expand into general music for the very young child as well. After much research, I chose Kindermusik as the best available quality program for young students. I have been teaching the Kindermusik program since 1999 and I am still very much impressed by its overall quality and the sheer amount of thought and research put into each detail. Kindermusik is continually researching and updating their programs for ever increasing quality. They are committed to bringing the best for you and your child.

I feel very fortunate to have been able to combine all of my loves - of teaching, of music, and now of also working with young children. I hope you and your child will choose to join us for musical growth and exploration.

I am affiliated with:
